Teletherapy

Currently, I am conducting regular appointments via teletherapy. Often times, people have many questions related to teletherapy. I find this can be especially true if people have not used teletherapy before and/or if the therapy relationship is starting via teletherapy. In my experience, teletherapy can feel awkward at first and then becomes more and more natural. Below, I try to answer some of the most common questions I am asked in regards to teletherapy.

Teletherapy FAQs

How do I schedule a teletherapy appointment?

The first step would be for us to have an initial phone or video consultation so I can learn more about what’s going on in your life and answer any questions you have about doing therapy together. During that consultation, if we decide to work together we would then find a time that fits both of our schedules and I would send you new client paperwork just like I would if we were meeting in person.

Does teletherapy work?

I have found teletherapy can be a very effective form of therapy and can even have some unique benefits (for example, minimizing commuting and scheduling advantages). At the same time, teletherapy isn’t for everyone. My commitment is that if for a specific reason I do not believe teletherapy would be a viable option, I will communicate this and we can discuss further.

Is teletherapy video or phone calls?

I conduct teletherapy via phone calls and/or video sessions depending on your preference. Sometimes, people want to try out video and decide it’s too distracting; other times people start with phone calls and decide to give video a try. I am flexible and we can figure out together what feels best.

How do I do teletherapy “right”?

There isn’t necessarily one right way to do teletherapy. However, there are some things you can do that will help. For example, having a private space in which you can talk freely is very important. As another example, turning off notifications can also help minimize digital distractions. During either our phone consultation or our first session, I’m happy to address any questions or concerns you might have regarding how to get the most out of your teletherapy sessions.

How do I pay for teletherapy?

I accept credit cards and Zelle.

If I don’t like teletherapy, can I resume in-person sessions?

Right now, I am only conducting teletherapy sessions. When this changes, I will let all clients currently in therapy know about the option of returning to in-person meetings.
