Men’s Issues
It’s complicated being a man in 2024.
According to some research, nearly 31 percent of men will experience a period of depression in their lifetime. Men are also less likely to seek treatment for mental health. For lots of reasons, it can be hard for men to feel ok about seeking help. I remember when I was a kid (before Google Maps existed) not wanting to ask for directions because I thought this represented weakness or somehow was not what a strong boy would do. If it’s hard to ask for help with geographical directions, it can feel extremely difficult to ask for help in a more significant way like seeking therapy.
I work with male clients that are trying to figure life out: how to succeed professionally, how to navigate stress, how to balance significant career pressure while also dating or thriving in a romantic relationship, how to experience a sense of peace amidst feeling pulled in a lot of different directions.
Some men want to see a male therapist. There can be a number of reasons for this, including believing that another man may have an easier time understanding what’s going on in your life life; seeking a positive male relationship because of a negative relationship with one’s father; having an easier time discussing sexual matters with another man; wanting another man’s perspective on a romantic relationship; having an easier time opening up emotionally to another man; and the list goes on.
Regardless of your reason, my hope is to create an environment in which therapy can be a genuinely positive experience. Moreover, I hope to create an environment in which you feel appreciated as a man and acknowledged for the complexities of being a man in 2023. To share one example, I have worked with many men that feel significant pressure to be professionally and financially successful while also feeling significant pressure to make changes for the sake of their romantic relationship. This can feel overwhelming and very stressful. Fortunately, therapy can help navigate such complex and stressful life circumstances, and I strive to help men embrace and nurture healthy masculinity.
